Margaret O‘Brien was born in England in 1972, she was brought up in Ennis Co. Clare, where upon leaving school she attended the Limerick College of Art & Design. After attaining a first Class honours degree in Fine Art she began her career as a professional Printmaker in the Blackchurch Print studio in Dublin. She began giving night classes in screen print and along with producing her own work became interested in the teaching element of Fine Art. She had three solo exhibitions between 1999 and 2004, and has been selected for numerous group shows including being an invited artist in annual show at the R.H.A.

In 2004 she graduated from the The Slade school of Fine Art with a Masters in Fine Art, she has been awarded many prize’s for her work in both Ireland and England including the Professional Development & Training award and the Mary Farl Powers award in 2003, The Arts and Humanities Research award and was shortlisted for the Adrian Carruthers award in London in 2004.

Blue Cups #6

Blue Cups #6

I started making prints as a student at the Institut Saint Luc in Brussels in the 1980’s, taking part in my first exhibition, in Anderlecht, Brussels, in 1989. I joined Graphic Studio Dublin in 1991. Over the past 25 years my practice has included monotypes, lithographs and etchings which have been exhibited widely in Ireland and internationally.  I am a full time artist/printmaker.

My images are mainly still life subjects and I like to work in series, pursuing an idea or motif,  taking inspiration from small artefacts which refer to wider ideas, literature and history.

Preoccupations have included  the sources of imagery we take for granted from Sufi poetry to Renaissance painting.

My current work includes studies of museum pieces, especially vessels, lamps,  shards and fragments, and evocative objects which create space for  insight and imagination.

Recent exhibitions include: Portes Ouvertes, Centre Culturel Irlandais, Paris where I had a three-month residency, 2014, PRESSED, an exhibition of contemporary print, Dun Laoghaire, 2013, and Lines of Descent, solo exhibition Graphic Studio Gallery, Dublin 2012.
