Alison Pilkington was born in Sligo in 1967. She graduated with a Diploma in Fine Art Painting and Printmaking from Sligo RTC in 1989 and with a BA Hons in Fine Art Painting from National College Art & Design in 1990. She completed an MA in Film and TV studies in Dublin City University in 1994.

Alison joined the Black Church Print Studio in 1997. She has worked in a broad range of printed techniques. The areas of printmaking that she specialises in are relief printmaking and lithography. In particular she has concentrated on an etched lino technique to produce graphic work that echoes the strong painterly qualities that she has become known for. She draws inspiration for her graphic work from her paintings. The work is process led and this ulitimatley determines the outcome of the image. She has produced large scale print installations that combine print, video and painting.

She has exhibitied widely throughout the last ten years in Ireland and abroad. Her work has been selected for group shows in Ireland, Scotland, England and the United States, and she has had solo exhibitions in Belltable Arts Centre Limerick, Sligo Art Gallery, Basement Gallery Dundalk, The Workroom Dublin, and the Kevin Kavanagh Dublin. Her work is in numerous public and private collections including OPW, Univeristy College Dublin and Bank Of Ireland.

Through her paintings, prints and installation work, Pilkington continues to explore her preoccupation with themes of placement and journeys, both psychic and physical. Influences for her work are loosely drawn from the anonymous Islamic artists whose work she has seen many times in Southern Spain and Morocco.
Her prints and paintings explore the possibility that shape, colour and abstract symbol can have diverse interpretations and the unlimited concepts of what can be expressed through them, ranging from searching the heart to mapping the stars.

Artist Statement

“The act of making is a fundamental, indeed primary, human activity. Artistic endeavour as part of that activity functions to interpret, illuminate and transform the world we live in. My work examines the varied landscapes and environments both internal and external that mankind inhabits. I work with large plates using all the techniques of intaglio to create highly textured images. I like to think of this as ‘building’ plates and in this sense there is a sculptural aspect to the work. It is an act of simulation. At times my prints have also approximated the characteristics of paintings. This transformation within the medium is of considerable interest to me.
My work is multifaceted culminating in the convergence of ideas, experiences, and events both current and historical. Anecdote plays a significant role in my work. The whole gamut of human kinds’ trials and tribulations; successes and failures, are explored. Elements within some compositions reference architectural form, representing the structures that man has devised for a functional society and civilisation. Visualised, is the way in which humanity has imposed itself on the natural world. How exploited. Compositional elements that are organic or apparently chaotic portray an oppositional viewpoint; nature as adversary to human enterprise. It is in the tension between these two forces that I place my mark.”

Again,The Quiver Tree At Sunrise

She joined the Graphic Studio Dublin in 2004 she has been editioning prints for the Graphic Studio Dublin, Stoney Road Press and privately for other artists and members. She has exhibited in various group shows in Ireland, Poland and South Africa.

Artist’s Statement:
How do my ideas develop from my imagination and transform into prints? Sometimes it can be difficult to describe the process when at the end a result can appear as if from nowhere. The snail delicate and fragile, moves methodically from A to B, the idea moves to a drawing and from there to a plate and then to ink and paper. And here, a wander, a few diversions and a happy accident until almost unnoticed the print arrives.
